  • Description

AFTER YEARS OF STUDY AND REFLECTION, POPE PAUL TODAY RULED OUT OF ALL FORMS OF ARTIFICIAL BIRTH CONTROL FOR ROMAN CATHOLIC COUPLES. HE CONDEMNED STERILISATION, ABORTION AND THE PILL, SAYING THAT ARTIFICIAL CONTRACEPTION LED TO MARITAL INFIDELITY, IMMORALITY, LOSS OF RESPECT FOR WOMEN AND EVEN POLITICAL DANGERS.

MONSIGNOR FERNANDO LAMBRUSCHINI, A PROMINENT VATICAN THEOLOGIAN, EXPLAINING THE EDICT AT A PRESS CONFERENCE, SAID THAT IT DID NOT CLOSE THE DOOR TO FUTURE RELAXATION, BUT ITS RULING WAS INTENDED TO BE FOLLOWED BY ALL CATHOLICS.

THE PAPAL RULING CAME IN AN ENCYCLICAL ENTITLED HUMANAE VITAE -- OF HUMAN LIFE. THE POPE SAID HE REALISED IT WOULD DISAPPOINT MANY AND SAID THE CHURCH SHOULD NOT BE SURPRISED AT OPPOSITION TO IT, BUT SHOULD CONTINUE TO PROCLAIM THE MORAL LAW WITH HUMBLE FIRMNESS.

THE POPE REITERATED THAT THE CHURCH PERMITTED CONTRACEPTION BY DRUGS OR OPERATIONS ONLY IF THEY WERE NECESSARY IN CASE OF ILLNESS.

THE ISSUE HAS LONG BEEN A CONTROVERSIAL ONE AMONG THE WORLD'S 550 MILLION CATHOLICS. IN 1966, A SPECIAL PONTIFICAL COMMISSION OF NON-CLERICAL EXPERTS FROM MANY COUNTRIES RECOMMENDED RELAXING THE CHURCH'S TRADITIONAL BAN ON ARTIFICIAL CONTRACEPTION. LAST YEAR, A WORLD CONGRESS OF CATHOLIC LAYMEN SAID THE QUESTION SHOULD BE LEFT TO INDIVIDUAL CONSCIENCES.

TODAY'S ENCYCLICAL RAISED MUCH PROTEST FROM CATHOLICS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, MANY OF WHOM EXPECTED A MORE LIBERAL RULING ON THE QUESTION IN VIEW OF THE INCREASING DIFFICULTIES OF RISING POPULATIONS.
