  • Description

Bolivia has how admitted that a former interior Minister arrested for plotting against President Hugo Danzer died from blows he received from the police. But a Government enquiry into his death is continuing.

At first the Government had claimed that Colonel Andres Selich died from falling downstairs. He was detained along with seven other people on Monday (14 May) and died the same night in a building owned by the Interior Ministry.

On Friday (18 May) the Ministry altered its version of what had happened. At a news conference, Interior Minister Alfrado Arce (who replaced Colonel Selich 17 months ago) read signed statements by three policemen who had interrogated the ex-minister and struck the blows.

Colonel Selich was one of the officers who, with General Banzer, overthrew Left-wing President Juan Jose Torres in a bloody three-day civil war in August 1971.

He was purged from the cabinet four months later and last year was removed from all government posts on the grounds that he was a "dangerous element."
No explanation has been given of bullet holes in the house in which he was arrested.
