Background: Space scientists at the Northrop Space Laboratories in Hawthorne...in southern California...have discovered that transistors are able to heal themselves, and they say this accounts for the mid-flight recovery of the communications satellites, Tellstar and Relay.Dr.Leonard Gardiner, a Northrop scientist, called this finding a break-through.And he said this self-healing quality of the space transistors -- the ability to recover from radiation damage - probably would permit the British satellite, Aerial, to go back into operation, too.Dr.Gardiner announced the finding last Friday (11 January). He said it was the result of a two-year research project at Northrop -- a study of the effects of radiation on electronic components in space conditions.(Additional information on SOF).
