  • Description

Greatly disturbed and annoyed by the Hollywood production of her 'life' in the film 'The inn of the Sixth Happiness' starring Ingrid Bergman, 59 year old missionary Gladys Aylward was filmed at her home in Taipeh, Formosa Jan 14.

Based on an biography by British writer Alan Burgess, the film tells of Miss Aylward's missionary career, began some 25 years ago, when, from London, England, practically penniless, she travelled by any and every possible means to get to China, a country which has always fascinated her. For 20 years she settled in China until the Communist 'take-over'. After a short spell in England she returned to Formosa, where for the past two years she has lived in a small rented sparsely furnished room. Three of her 'adopted' children she brought out of China, are now married and live nearby in Formosa.

Miss Aylward is fighting 20th Century Fox, makers of the film, for alleged slander. Particularly in the films love scenes. "I have never had a love scene in my life" said Miss Aylward, "I shall fight them until the last breath is taken away from me". She feels the picture has brought her great pain and unhappiness, ruining her good and pure name.
