  • Description

There was a coming together of extreme left and right-wing elements of Spain's political scene at a meeting in Madrid on Thursday (27 October). By Spanish standards it wasn't a big meeting, nor did it have great political significance. But it could mark a small change in attitude between the two extremes.

SYNOPSIS: It was a meeting of Madrid's 21 Club, founded during the Eranco period by rightwingers, said to be even further right than the Government.

There Senor Manuel Fraga Iribarne, leader of the rightist Popular Alliance party, introduced the Spanish Communist party leader Senor Santiago Carrillo, as guest speaker. When Senor Carrillo was first invited to speak at the club there was widespread protest among members, and some resigned.

But those who overcame their right-wing feelings to attend the meeting listened attentively to Senor Carrillo's address on `Euro-Communism'. Spain has long experience of bitter clashed between opposing political factions, but on the day of this meeting there was a sign of improving tolerance among the various groups. For, with the support of major opposition parties, the Spanish Parliament approved a blueprint aimed at overcoming the country's economic and political problems.

Senor Carrillo enthusiastically supported the agreement, and does not hide his fear of an army takeover should Spain's new democracy fail. The signing of the Government agreement showed a new attitude of compromise, which could perhaps be strengthened by meetings such as these between opposing factions.
