  • Description

Cuban Premier Fidel Castro told extreme leftwing students in conception on Thursday (18 November) that armed struggle to achieve power was justified if there was no alternative. But he gave the radical students no encouragement for open opposition to the policies of Chile's Marxist President Salvador Allende.

Many of the students were members of the Militant Revolutionary leftwing movement, MIR, which is openly critical of President Allende's attempts to steer Chile down the road to socialism by legal and democratic means.

Dr. Castro has postponed his meeting with the students from Wednesday because of a cold that has bothered him during his nine-days of touring Chile.

SYNOPSIS: Nearing Concepcion in Chile on Thursday was a motorcade carrying Cuban Premier Fidel Castro. During his nine days so far in Chile, Dr. Castro has addressed workers, city and rural citizens and some students. On Thursday he was to speak to an assembly of extreme left-wing students from Chilean universities.

Many of the students gathered in Concepcion were members of the Militant Revolutionary leftwing movement, M-I-R, which is openly critical of President Salvador Allende.

Dr. Castro was cheered when he took to the rostrum and began singing songs popular with the students, with a guitar accompaniment.

The Cuban Premier told the students that armed struggle to achieve power was justified, if there was no alternative. But he gave the students no encouragement for open opposition to the policies of Marxist president Allende. Many of the students are in sharp disagreement with President Allende's attempts to steer Chile down the road to socialism by legal and democratic means. Dr. Castro also warned extremist groups of the dangers of fragmentation and said a revolution can only survive through unity. He said that "often a revolution fails because of the faults of the revolutionaries themselves."
