There are only two artificial kidneys in Europe. One is in Germany and is the at present being used in Munich by Dr. Sartorius for the treatment of Duncan Edwards, the Manchester Inited football player gravely injured in the Munich air disaster.
As the German artificial kidney may have to be withdrawn from the Munich hospital for emergency use elsewhere, the second apparatus, which is stationed at the Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Hospital at Halton, in Buckinghamshire, has been put on stand-by emergency call.
A special team is standing by at Halton, composed of Group Captain R.C.Jackson, Flight Lieutenant N.V.Bunker (Medical Officers), Pilot Officer J.E.Scott (Bio-Chemist) and Flight Officer R.A.Penrose (Nursing Sister)to fly with the artificial kidney to Munich to take over duties in fighting for the life of Duncan Edwards.
