  • Description

A STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED IN BERMUDA AND A STRICT CURFEW HAS BEEN IMPOSED ON THE ISLAND. THE DECISION WAS MADE BY THE GOVERNOR, LORD MARTONMERE, AS RIOTING SPREAD THROUGH THE CAPITAL OF HAMILTON FOR THE SECOND SUCCESSIVE DAY.

THE VIOLENCE BEGAN YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) IN HAMILTON WHEN ABOUT 300 YOUTHS WERE TURNED AWAY FROM A FAIR TO RAISE FUNDS FOR HANDICAPPED CHILDREN. RIOT POLICE WERE CALLED IN AS THE YOUTHS SMASHED SHOP WINDOWS AND LOOTED MERCHANDISE.

AT NIGHT THE VIOLENCE BROKE OUT AGAIN. FIVE CIVILIANS WERE INJURED IN CLASHES WITH POLICE, WHO USED TEARGAS AND BATONS TO DISPERSE THE CROWDS. IN OTHER AREAS OF HAMILTON THERE WERE FIRES STARTED BY THE RIOTING YOUTHS. MOTORCYCLES AND CARS WERE OVERTURNED AND BURNED.

IN ONE INSTANCE A FURNITURE STORE WAS BURNED OUT AND FIREMEN BATTLING THE FLAMES WERE ATTACKED BY YOUTHS ARMED WITH METAL PIPES. IN AN EMERGENCY MEASURE, THE BERMUDA REGIMENT WAS CALLED IN AND THE CONSTABULARY RESERVE WAS PUT ON ALERT. THE BRITISH FRIGATE H.M.S. LEOPARD IS STEAMING TOWARDS BERMUDA.
