Background: Nearly 8 million industry workers went on a four hour strike today throughout Italy to protest against breakdowns in contract negotiations. Also striking today were university professors and other university staff who are angry at the government's failure to come up with a solution to the country's serious university problems.
Bus drivers struck for four hours also , from 1030 until 1430 creating chaos in the already erratic driving conditions. Many government workers, who end their working day at 1400 were left stranded in the streets until the strikers resumed working.
