    Zambian President Dr Kenneth Kaunda arrived in Zaire's capital Kinshasa on Saturday (18 December) to begin a 24-hour visit.

    SYNOPSIS: Dr Kaunda arrived with a small delegation, which included his Foreign Minister Seteke Mwale.

    Zaire's President Mobutu Sese Seko was on hand a the airport to greet his guest. The two Presidents exchanged warm greetings before introductions began.

    Zaire's news agency AZAP said that Dr Kaunda's visit was of great importance to the future of relations between Zaire and Zambia. AZAP said both countries faced similar economic and cultural problems and that the means of solving these problems lay in co-operation between the African states.

    After completing airport formalities, which included the inspection of a guard of honour, Dr Kaunda left for the Presidential Palace with his host. At a news conference after his talks with President Mobutu, the Zambian leader said the discussions had been "friendly and helpful." He also said that a permanent commission to regularise bilateral relations would be set up.
