    Background: Soviet swimmers dominated the world high-speed underwater swimming championships held in Moscow on August 26, Several countries from western as well as eastern Europe, took part in a tournament where the leg action. Alexeit Zhukov of the Soviet Union established a world record time of 15.96 seconds in winning the 50 metre event for metres relay for men. Zhukov, in the fourth lane, was peerless. In the 4 x 200 metres relay for women, the Soviet team, also in lane four, set a world record time of 6 minutes 43.47 seconds. And to complete a very good day for the host nation, it won the men's 4 x 200 metres event. Again the fourth lane and a world record time of 6 minutes and 27 hundredths of a second.
