Background: In the age of slimming fads, there are few perks for the fat lady. But in the Philippines, larger-than-life lovelies have been recognised at last with a beauty contest of their own.
SYNOPSIS: After a fund-raising walk for charity, the 15 semi-finalists of the Miss Dabiana Contest were taken by truck to the Philippine Cultural Centre for the final judging. The girls wore shorts and T-shirts instead of the usual beauty garb of swimsuit or bikini. But an appreciative crowd was quick to applaud the contestant's obvious charm
But it wasn't all roses as one contestant found in her anxiety to join her colleagues on the stage.
Like all beauty contests, the finalists were nervously keyed for the result and eager to gain points ahead of their rivals. One clever girl hoped to scoop the big prize by influencing the judges with an early victory salute. The other contestants many not have been too impressed but the audience loved it.
Equally popular were these military manoeuvres by the girls to prove that there was more to them than met the eye - a case perhaps of calling up the big battalions.
Cecile Inigo, wearing the red hat, was finally declared winner, and went to the centre of the stage to receive acclaim. The losers contented themselves with an impromptu dance to the tune of Popeye the Sailor.
