  • Description

THE ISRAELI SUBMARINE DAKAR AND ITS CREW OF 69 ARE STILL MISSING. THE COMMANDER OF THE ISRAELI NAVY, ALUF SHLOMO ERELL, CONFIRMED IN HAIFA YESTERDAY (MONDAY) THAT A MYSTERIOUS RADIO SIGNAL HAD BEEN PICKED UP ON THE FREQUENCY USED BY THE DAKAR'S INDICATOR BUOY - BUT HE ADDED THAT HOPES WERE NOT HIGH.

THE COMMANDER, SPEAKING TO REPORTERS, SAID THAT THE TRANSMISSION - PICKED UP IN CYPRUS - WAS NOT THE SIGNAL THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENT BY THE BUOY, AND IT CAME FROM A DIRECTION THAT WAS NOWHERE ON THE DAKAR'S EXPECTED COURSE.

HE SAID THE SEARCH FOR THE DAKAR IN THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN WOULD CONTINUE UNTIL EITHER THE SUBMARINE - OR CLEAR EVIDENCE OF ITS FATE - WAS FOUND. THE SEARCH, IN WHICH FIVE NATIONS ARE TAKING PART, IS CONTROLLED FROM A BRITISH BASE IN CYPRUS.

THE AIRCRAFT AND SHIPS SCOURING THE SEA INTENSIFIED THE HUNT IMMEDIATELY THE MYSTERIOUS SIGNAL WAS HEARD. BUT THEY HAVE FOUND NOTHING.
