  • Description

President Amin of Uganda, who has recently expelled most of the Israeli community in Uganda and called on the Arab nations to form a united front against Israel, was expected to meet with Arab leaders on Tuesday (20 June) after the Organisation of African Unity's summit conference in Rabat, Morocco. The meeting was expected to take place in Mersa Matruh, an Egyptian Mediterranean resort near the Libyan border, where the leaders of the Federation of Arab Republics--Egypt, Libya and Syria--were scheduled to most of a three-day consultation on Middle East development.

Earlier this year President Amin expelled the Majority of Israeli residents in Uganda, including diplomats and construction engineers. Shortly afterwards, he re-opened the border between Uganda and the Sudan, closed three years earlier because of the Southern Sudanese rebellion against the Khartoum government.

This backgrounder, compiled from the Visnews film library, is intended to show developments leading to an apparent alignment between President Amin of Uganda and the Arab nations. Among the sequence shown is a film of President Amin--who is himself a Moslem--receiving the World Moslem Leader during a visit to the Ugandan capital.
