SALVAGE OPERATIONS HAVE STARTED AT THE WEST DRIEFONTEIN GOLD MINE IN THE TRANSVAAL, SOUTH AFRICA, FOLLOWING THE DISASTER YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) IN WHICH FIVE MINERS DIED AND 29 OTHERS ARE MISSING, PRESUMED DEAD.

THE DISASTER WAS CAUSED BY HUGE EARTH SUBSIDENCE WHICH OPENED UP A CRATER ABOUT 100 FEET DEEP AND 150 FEET ACROSS. A CRUSHING PLANT, THREE-STOREY HIGH, ON WHICH MOST OF THE MINERS WERE WORKING, COLLAPSED AS THE HOLE IN THE EARTH OPENED UP WITH A NOISE LIKE AN EXPLOSION. THE SUBSIDENCE CAME WITHOUT WARNING.

A WATER PIPE-BROKEN BY THE SUBSIDENCE - QUICKLY FLOODED THE CRATER AND THE CRUSHING MACHINE, GIVING THE TRAPPED MINERS NO CHANCE OF ESCAPING. MEANWHILE, RESCUE TEAMS STOOD BY, UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING.

WEST DRIEFONTEIN GOLD MINE IS THE RICHEST IN THE WORLD. IT PRODUCES MORE THAN SIX PER CENT OF SOUTH AFRICA'S GOLD OUTPUT, WORTH ABOUT GBP22 1/2 MILLION.

WORK STARTED TODAY ON TRYING ON TRYING TO RECOVER THE BODIES AND STABILISING THE GROUND.
