The first ever economic agreement between the Malagasy Republic and South Africa was signed in Tananarive, on Saturday (20 November). The agreements, under which the Malagasy Republic will receive a loan of 900 million Central African france (1,350,000 Sterling), were signed by Malagasy Vice-President Jacques Rabemananjara and South African Foreign Minister Dr. Hilgard Muller.
Dr. Muller headed a 20-man South Africa delegation on a three-day visit, the highest-level South African delegation ever to visit this African country.
The loan is mainly to finance the island's tourist industry, but experts accompanying Dr. Muller also discussed cooperation in the fields of agriculture, cultural relations and broadcasting.
Dr. Muller's visit was welcomed in the Republic as a sign of Pretoria's wish to develop relations with African countries. Malagasy President Philibert Tsiranana is one of the African leaders who favour "persuasion", not "confrontation".
Malawi is the only coloured African country with which Pretoria has full relations.
