    British international Ron Hill eclipsed the world's fastest marathon runners in Manchester, England, yesterday (20 July) to win the International Maxol Marathon event, which incorporated the British championship.

    Hill, a 29-year-old research chemist, was never headed after taking over the lead of the 200-strong field after 15 miles (24.1 kilometres). He then went on to cover the classic distance of 26 miles, 385 yards (42.2 kilometres) in two hours, 13 minutes, 42 seconds.

    Australian Derek Clayton, holder of the world's fastest time, finished second in 2:15:40, well outside his best time of 2:8:33.6.

    Jim Alder, Britain's Commonwealth champion, was third in 2:18:18:, followed by Yoshiaki Unetani (2:19:37), Japanese winner of the famous Boston Marathon championship earlier this year. Britain's Bill Adcocks, fifth in the Mexico Olympic Marathon and the fastest marathon runner in Europe, was fifth in a time of 2:20:13.

    Japanese silver-medallist Kenji Kimihara, who with Clayton, Adcocks, and Unetani completes the world's fastest marathon quartet, was seventh in 2:23:25.
