    NAVAL UNITS OF JAPAN'S SELF-DEFENCE FORCE HAVE CARRIED OUT TESTS ON A NEW TYPE OF ANTI-SUBMARINE DEVICE, USING RADAR-CONTROLLED PILOTLESS HELICOPTERS TO FIRE ROCKETS AT SUBMERGED SUBMARINES.

    ALTHOUGH THE SYSTEM IS STILL TO BE PERFECTED, JAPAN'S MARITIME FORCES HOPE TO BE EQUIPPED WITH SUFFICIENT OF THE UNITS TO PATROL ITS ENTIRE COASTLINE.

    THIS ANTI-SUBMARINE SYSTEMS IS CO-ORDINATED BY SPOTTER AIRCRAFT WHEN THEY LOCATE SUBMARINES ON DETECTION DEVICES. PATROL SHIPS ARE THEN CALLED INTO AREA, EQUIPPED WITH A SMALL, PILOTLESS HELICOPTER ARMED WITH TWO ROCKETS.

    THE HELICOPTER IS LAUNCHED AND GUIDED BY RADAR FROM THE PATROL LAUNCH AND ITS ROCKETS FIRED BY REMOTE CONTROL. THE ROCKETS ARE SET TO EXPLODE UNDERWATER.

    THIS INITIAL ATTACK IS THEN BACKED UP BY MORE ROCKETS FIRED FROM THE PATROL BOATS,WHILE THE RADAR-CONTROLLED HELICOPTER RETURNS TO ITS MOTHER-SHIP.

    THESE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT OFF JAPAN'S OSHIMA ISLANDS, TWO HUNDRED MILES (322 KMS.) WEST OF TOKYO, IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN.
