  • Description

The ceasefire along the Suez Canal is two years old (Monday, August 7) but prospects of reopening the waterway to international traffic are thought to be as slight as ever, as the crisis in the Middle East remains deadlocked.

However, political observers in Cairo are watching with interest the resumption of the mission of the United Nations special envoy to the Middle East, Dr. Gunnar Jarring. He has been meeting both Egyptian and Israeli diplomats in New York and will be holding further talks over the next couple of weeks with parties to the dispute.

The United States is known to want the canal opened as a first stage in a Middle East settlement, but the Egyptian position is that Israeli forces must first withdraw from the occupied eastern bank of the waterway.

The brittle ceasefire along the canal has been broken several times in the last two years. The most recent incident was on July the 24th, when Egypt said its missiles had shot down an Israeli jet over the canal.
