  • Description

PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY OF THE IVORY COAST, YESTERDAY (APRIL 17) SPENT 45 MINUTES WITH PRESIDENT DE GAULLE AT THE ELYSEE IN PARIS.

AFTER HIS TALKS WITH PRESIDENT DE GAULLE, PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY TOLD PRESSMEN THAT ONLY A NEGOTIATED SOLUTION COULD END THE NIGERIA-BIAFRA CONFLICT.

IN ANSWER TO QUESTIONS HE SAID, "EVEN IF UMUAHIA WERE TO BE CONQUERED I BELIEVE THE WAR WOULD CONTINUE."
"THE QUESTION IS NOT WHO IS RIGHT OR WRONG, BUT TO BRING PEACE BACK TO AFRICA."
THE PRESIDENT WISHED SUCCESS TO THE MONROVIA CONFERENCE OF HEAD OF MEMBER STATES OF THE O.A.U. CONSULTATIVE COMMISSION, AND DID NOT EXCLUDE THE POSSIBILITY OF GOING TO MONROVIA HIMSELF. PRESIDENT TUBMAN HAS INVITED HIM AS AN OBSERVER.

"I HAVE ASKED FOR DETAILS OF AN OBSERVER'S STATUS", HE SAID, "BUT IF I WENT TO MONROVIA, EVEN AS AN OBSERVER. IT WOULD BE ON CONDITION I CAN TAKE PART IN THE SEARCH FOR PEACE."
THE IVORY COAST PRESIDENT, WHO HAS BEEN STAYING IN EUROPE FOR TWO MONTHS, SAID HE WOULD BE RETURNING HOME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. HE HAS MET GENERAL DE GAULLE THREE TIMES DURING THIS VISIT.
