Background: Following his 90-minute address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday (December 4), President Salvador Allende of Chile left for Algiers, arriving on Tuesday on a 17-hour stopover en route to Moscow. He was due to have talks with Algerian President Houari Boumedienne, before proceeding to the Soviet Capital. Afterwards, he is due to visit Madrid, Paris and Havana before flying home to Santiago.

The problems facing the third-world mineral-producing nations - the theme of his address to the General Assembly - were expected to figure largely in President Allende's talks with President Boumedienne. During his speech at the U.N., where he also conferred privately with Secretary-General Dr. Kurt Waldheim, President Allende attacked the policies of international corporations in their dealings with the developing nations, especially in the mineral-exploiting field.

At Algiers airport, he was given a warm welcome by President Boumedienne. In a statement to newsmen, Dr. Allende thanked the Algerian people for their support for 'the struggle of the Chilean people.'
The two Presidents were also expected, according to news reports, to review prospects of a joint meeting between oil and copper-producing nations.
