Background: Sir Winston Churchill will celebrate his eight-sixth birthday Nov 30 with a family party at his Hyde Park Gate, London, home. Something of a preview of this party was given Nov 29 when members of the press inspected the giant cake made for the festivities by Floris, the famous Soho baker and confectioner.
Weighing between seventy and a hundred pounds, the cake motif is a Cornucopia - horn of plenty - symbolising the good things in the full life of this famous statesman.
Miniature replicas - all edible - include Sir Winston's palette, brushes, and one of his paintings; his Trinity House cap and standard; Nobel medal, the Bell of Freedom, and other degrees and honours conferred upon him by many nations; 'Rufus' his chocolate coloured poodle dog; bottles of Scotch whisky and his favourite brandy; a beautiful 2 1/2x1 1/4 inch replica of Vol. II of his work 'A History of the English Speaking People'; and of course his famous bow tie, cane, hat and a lifelike cigar with glowing ash about to fall from the end.
Bakery officials say the cake - their nineteenth for Sir Winston - took their experts many months in research before the design was finished. The actual preparing and cooking took about six weeks.
