Background: A device which can be attached to a cash bag to discourage attacks on street tradesmen and cash collectors was demonstrated in Liverpool on Thursday (8 February).

Milkmen and rent collectors have been favourite targets for robbery and an advantage of the device is that it can be fitted to an ordinary collection bag.

A six-inch-long smoke-grenade is clipped to a unit in the bag and attached to the collector's wrist by a chain. If the bag is snatched, the grenade explodes, giving off a cloud of smoke and spraying the attacker and the money with orange dye.

The device, which costs about GBP6 sterling (US $14) to fit, was demonstrated to police and local firms involved in door to door cash collection. One Liverpool dairy firm has had eight of its milkmen robbed in the past few months, losing more than GBP700 in cash. Its 50 milkmen have now been equipped with the device.
