    The British Canoe Union has hopes this year that British competitors will win medals in the Olympic canoeing events - to be staged at Augsburg.

    Two leading British hopefuls took part in a pre-Olympic time trial on the upper reaches of the River Tay in Scotland last week. David Mitchell has been British National Champion in the Kayak slalom sight time and he also won a silver medal at the world championships at Lipno in Czechoslovakia in 1967. John McLeod is the ri??? star in British Kayak slalom competition - and in the filmed time trial he finished a comfortable second to David Mitchell.

    The British Canoe Union has named a team of thirteen for the Olympic Games. There will be three British boats in each of the Men's Kayak, Women's Kayak and Canadian Singles events, and two boats in the Canadian doubles.

    The United Kingdom sent a big team to the canoe events in the 196??? Olympics at Mexico City -- but the nearest any of them came to a m???al were the semi-finals.
