    THE DEATH TOLL FROM MONDAY'S EARTHQUAKE IN INDIA HAS RISEN TO 172 TODAY (WEDNESDAY), AND THERE ARE FEARS THAT MORE HAVE BEEN KILLED. IN THE TOWN OF KOYNA NAGAR, 87 PEOPLE HAVE DIED. EARLY DOUBTS ABOUT THE SURVIVAL OF THE VITAL KOYNA DAM HAVE BEEN ALLAYED -- ALTHOUGH IT HAS SUFFERED SOME CRACKS IN THE SPILLWAY, THE INDIAN MINISTER OF IRRIGATION AND POWER, DR. K.L. RAO, HAS SAID THERE IS NO DANGER OF IT COLLAPSING.

    OFFICIALS SAY SOME 75 VILLAGES DEEP IN THE INTERIOR OF INDIA, AND ON HILLTOPS, HAVE YET TO BE VISITED TO CHECK CASUALTIES. BUT IN THE 122 VILLAGES CHECKED SO FAR, 6,000 HOUSES HAD COLLAPSED.

    ABOUT 600 PEOPLE WERE INJURED, MOST OF THEM NO SERIOUSLY.

    MILD TREMORS CONTINUED TODAY IN KOYNA NAGAR AND IN PARTS OF WESTERN INDIA.

    IN KOYNA NAGAR RESCUE WORKERS MOVED THROUGH THE DEBRIS OF SHATTERED HOMES, UNCOVERING DEAD AND WOUNDED TOWNSPEOPLE. MANY OF THE RESCUE WORKERS RISKED DEATH AS BOULDERS LOOSENED BY THE EARTHQUAKE CRASHED DOWN PAST THEM.

    THOUSANDS HAVE BEEN LEFT HOMELESS, AND HOSPITALS HAVE BEEN WORKING CONSTANTLY IN AN EFFORT TO TREAT THE FLOOD OF PATIENTS.
