  • Description

Ships in the Gulf of Mexico have been warned to stay clear of a burning gas rig.

Fire erupted in the natural gas well on Friday (13 June), following an explosion two days earlier which split gas into the waters of the Gulf.

The drilling rig, off the Louisiana coast, is owned by the Amoco Production Company, which says a second well may have to be drilled to snuff out the fire.

There are three other wells on the platform, and barges have been spraying them and the surrounding area with water in an effort to stop the fire spreading.

So far there have been no casualties.

SYNOPSIS: Flames are shooting a hundred and fifty feet in the air from this burning natural gas rig in the Gulf of Mexico. The fire broke out in one well after an explosion.... then part of the rig collapsed and gas began leaking.

There are three other wells on the platform, and fire barges are trying to stop the fire spreading to them. No one has been hurt so far, but shipping has been warned to stay cleat of the area which is off the Louisiana coast. The owners -- the Amoco production Company -- say a second well may have to be drilled to snuff out the fire in the first one. The fire's left a veneer of gas distillate in the Gulf.
