    THE POWER SHORTAGE HAS LED TO ELECTRICITY BEING CUT OFF IN SOME QUARTERS OF THE MAIN TOWN, ST DENIS, IN ORDER TO KEEP FACTORIES GOING. MOVES TO DISCOURAGE DOMESTIC POWER CONSUMPTION INCLUDED PUTTING CLOCKS BACK AN HOUR IN THE HOPE THAT PEOPLE WOULD GO TO BED EARLIER AND THUS USE LESS ELECTRICITY.

    THE FIRST STEPS TO STARTING A HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME WERE TAKEN AS LONG AGO AS 1929...BUT THE COMPANY CONCERNED IN THE PROJECT WENT BANKRUPT, AND WORK EVENTUALLY GOT UNDERWAY IN 1964. NOW THE PROJECT IS COMPLETED, AFTER 650 MEN WORKED ROUND-THE-CLOCK, SEVEN OF THEM LOSING THEIR LIVES IN CONSTRUCTION WORK THAT WAS OFTEN DANGEROUS.

    SOME 40,000 CUBIC METRES OF CONCRETE AND 1,000 TONS OF STEEL WENT INTO THE PROJECT.
