    As Israeli and Egyptian representatives in the United Nations conferred with Middle East envoy Gunnar Jarring on Thursday (11 March), representatives of the Big Four discussed the Middle East situation at the United States Mission to the U.N. in New York.

    Following the 90-minute session, American Ambassador George Bush spoke to journalists waiting outside.

    SYNOPSIS: Hosting the latest meeting of the Big Four on the Middle East on Thursday was the United States -- so the delegates want to the American U.N. Mission in New York.

    British Ambassador Colin Crowe was among those taking part. Across the street, in the United Nations itself, Egyptian and israeli delegates were each conferring with Middle East envoy Gunnar Jarring. The meetings with Dr Jarring were the first in almost two weeks.

    Soviet Ambassador Jacob Malik attended the session -- as did France's Deputy Ambassador, Francois de la Gorse. The Israeli Ambassador implied after his meeting with Dr Jarring that Israel was leaving the door open for discussions of a peace settlement without prior conditions He said Israel wasn't asking Egypt to accept its basic position as a prior condition to talks. Following the meeting of the Big Four, American Ambassador Bush spoke to reporters.
