  • Description

Eight thousand troops of the Khmer Army are carrying out a big sweep just on the outskirts of Phnom Penh following Communist rocket attacks on the capital.

Communist gunners have mounted a daily shelling of Phnom Penh's airport, causing more damage to houses nearby rather than military installations - such as this incident on film last Monday.

The sweep, which began on Tuesday, is designed to clear the western approaches to the capital. North Vietnamese troops are holding two villages no more than seven miles form the city limits.

Khmer Army chiefs believe the rockets have been fired from the beleaguered area. Government attempts to retake the villages have been repulsed so far - despite heavy artillery cover and strafing by Cobra gunships.

The upsurge in fighting follows the end of the monsoon season when heavy rains pinned down government and Communist forces alike.
