  • Description

WAR IN THE CONGO - AND FOR THE FIRST TIME AMERICAN HEAVY TRANSPORT PLANES ARE BEING USED TO CARRY REINFORCEMENTS TO THE UNITED NATIONS FORCES ENGAGED IN A BITTER "FIGHT-TO-THE-FINISH" WITH THE KATANGESE ARMY OF PRESIDENT TSHOMBE IN AND AROUND THE CAPITAL, ELISABETHVILLE. ON DECEMBER 6, GLOBEMASTER PLANES ARRIVED AT LEOPOLDVILLE, THE CAPITAL OF THE CONGO REPUBLIC WITH 300 IRISH TROOPS WHO HAD LEFT DUBLIN THE DAY BEFORE WITH FULL BATTLE EQUIPMENT. THE TROOPS - OF THE 36TH BATTALION - ARE THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF IRISH CONTINGENTS ON THEIR WAY TO THE CONGO. AFTER A SHORT STAY IN LEOPOLDVILLE, THE FRESH TROOPS ARE TO BE FLOWN TO KATANGA.

THE AMERICAN STATE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCED ON DECEMBER 6 THAT SOME 21 GIANT CARGO PLANES WOULD BE PROVIDED TO HELP THE UNITED NATIONS IN THE CONGO. THEY WOULD ADD TO THE SIX U.S. TRANSPORT ALREADY THERE.

REPORTS FROM KATANGA ON THE NIGHT OF DECEMBER 7 SAID THAT PRESIDENT TSHOMBE WHO HAD FLOWN FROM PARIS, WAS BACK IN THE PROVINCE TO LEAD THE FIGHT AGAINST THE UNITED NATIONS. HE HAD CROSSED THE BORDER FROM NORTHERN RHODESIA AFTER FLYING FROM BRAZZAVILLE.

IN ELISABETHVILLE DECEMBER 7 THE THREE-DAY-OLD BATTLE CONTINUED FURIOUSLY. ONE REPORT SAID THAT OVER 50 MEN DIED WHEN GHURKA TROOPS DISLODGED A KATANGA ROAD BLOCKS. WHICH THEY CLAIMED HAMPERED COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN ELISABETHVILLE AND THE AIRPORT, THAT STARTED THE PRESENT CONFLICT. THE NORTHERN PART OF ELISABETHVILLE HAS SEEN CUT OFF IN THE FIGHTING AND FOOD SUPPLIES ARE SHORT. WHILE UNITED NATIONS JET AIRCRAFT ATTACKED AMMUNITION DUMPS AND DESTROYED AN ANTI-AIRCRAFT POST AND TWO ARMY LORRIES, THE AIRLIFT TO ELISABETHVILLE AIRPORT BY THE U.S. TRANSPORTS WAS SUSPENDED AFTER A GLOBEMASTER HAD BEEN HIT BY GROUND FIRE. SUPPLIES FOR THE UNITED NATIONS FORCES IN KATANGA WILL NOW BE FLOWN TO KAMINA, 250 MILES AWAY.
