  • Description

DELEGATES FROM 37 COUNTRIES HAVE GATHERED IN DJAKARTA IN THE PAST WEEK FOR CELEBRATIONS MARKING THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AFRO-ASIAN CONFERENCE HELD IN BANDUNG, WEST JAVA, IN 1955.

ON TUESDAY MORNING MANY OF THE FOREIGN REPRESENTATIVES IN DJAKARTA FOR THE CELEBRATIONS DROVE TO PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S WEEKEND PALACE AT BOGOR, 40 MILES (65 KILOMETRES) SOUTH OF THE CAPITAL. THERE IN INFORMAL SURROUNDINGS THE DELEGATES WERE RECEIVED BY THE PRESIDENT AND HIS WIFE. AMONG THE MANY GUESTS WAS MARSHAL CHEN YI, THE FOREIGN MINISTER OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

THE BANDUNG CONFERENCE OF 1955 WAS ATTENDED BY 29 NATIONS, SOME JUST EMERGED FROM COLONIAL STATUS. THE MEETING PLACE GAVE A NAME TO THE SPIRIT OF NEUTRALISM AND NON-ALIGNMENT WHICH MANY PARTICIPANTS HAVE PURSUED SINCE.

SPEAKING TO THE DELEGATES IN DJAKARTA, PRESIDENT SUKARNO CALLED ON THE AFRO-ASIAN NATIONS TO CONFRONT THE UNITED NATIONS, WHICH INDONESIA WITHDREW FROM IN JANUARY. HE WARNED THAT IF THE WORLD BODY SET UP A WORLD POLICE FORCE IT WOULD FIND ITSELF "WALKING INTO THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS."
THE UNITED NATIONS IS DOMINATED BY IMPERIALISTS, PRESIDENT SUKARNO SAID. THE IMPERIALISTS UNITED TO HELP EACH OTHER OVER ISSUES SUCH AS ISRAEL AND MALAYSIA, SO THE AFRO-ASIAN COUNTRIES MUST ALSO UNITE TO FIGHT IMPERIALISM.

HE URGED AFRO-ASIAN NATIONS TO STAND ON THEIR OWN FEET ECONOMICALLY AND REJECT IMPERIALIST AID EVEN THOUGH THIS METHOD OF DEVELOPMENT MIGHT BE 100 TIMES MORE DIFFICULT.

IN A REFERENCE TO THE U.S. INVOLVEMENT IN SOUTH VIETNAM, HE SAID NO SOONER HAD THE INK DRIED ON THE 1954 GENEVA AGREEMENT ON VIETNAM THAN A NEW COLONIALISM APPEARED, PREENED ITS FEATHERS AND FLAPPED ITS WINGS.

MARKING THE CELEBRATIONS IN DJAKARTA, THERE WAS A BIG FIREWORK DISPLAY ON MONDAY EVENING. THE FIREWORKS WERE A GIFT FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA WHO SENT EXPERTS TO SET THEM OFF. A MILLION PEOPLE ARE REPORTED TO HAVE WATCHED THE DISPLAY WHICH LASTED MORE THAN TWO HOURS. THE WHOLE CITY WAS GIVEN A FACELIFT FOR THE CELEBRATIONS, WITH SPECIALLY ERECTED ARCHES, NEWLY PAINTED FENCES, AND AN ABSENCE OF BEGGARS WHO WERE TAKEN OUT OF THE CITY IN TRUCK-LOADS.
