SYNOPSIS: In New Delhi on Saturday, the Indian parliament unanimously approved the proclamation of a state emergency in the country. The proclamation had been issued by President Girl on Friday evening, and now gives the Government virtually unlimited powers in the country.

Indian Prime Minister Mrs Gandhi, in her address to Parliament, referred to Pakistan's declaration of war on Saturday morning. She was later to return to Parliament to tell of her decision to recognise the self-styled Bangla Desh Government. She was also to add that the whole Indian nation stood united in its resolve that Pakistan should be beaten back.

In Calcutta, newsmen were able to take advantage of India's new decision to give regular briefings on the state of the war. Lieutenant General Jagit Singh Arora told journalists that Indian forces had captured several towns in Eastern areas of East Pakistan and that heavy ground fighting was continuing along the Indian border with West Pakistan.

The General added that heavy fighting was also going in the Akhnoor area, where Indian troops had inflicted heavy leases on the Pakistanis. He also claimed that more than 80 Pakistani soldiers had been captured in northern India.
