    SIXTY-TWO PEOPLE DIED YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WHEN A CROWDED TROLLEY BUS CRASHES INTO THE RIVER OF NILE AT CAIRO. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED DURING THE RUSH HOUR, AND AMONG THE DEAD WERE SHOPPERS, OFFICE WORKERS AND SCHOOL CHILDREN. NINETEEN PASSENGERS IN THE BUS SURVIVED THE CRASH.

    FROGMEN WERE QUICKLY BROUGHT TO THE SCENE OF THE CRASH TO HELP IN THE WORK OF RETRIEVING THE BODIES. A MOBILE CRANE WAS USED TO HAUL THE BUS OUT OF THE RIVER - BUT THE SWIFT CURRENTS HAD SWEPT MANY BODIES CLEAR OF THE WRECKED VEHICLE. POLICE BOATS HAVE JOINED THE FROGMEN IN SEARCHING FOR VICTIMS.

    ON SHORE, POLICE ARE MAKING AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH. EYE-WITNESSES SAW THE VEHICLE SWERVE OFF THE ROAD AND THROUGH A FENCE INTO THE RIVER.

    SENIOR GOVERNMENT MINISTERS WERE QUICKLY ON THE SCENE AFTER THE ACCIDENT. MAJOR GENERAL YOUSSEF HAFEZ, THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR WATCHED AS THE BODIES WERE BROUGHT UP FROM THE BUS. OTHER MINISTERS ALSO VISITED THE SCENE.

    A HUGE CROWD GATHERED ON THE BANK OF THE NILE TO WATCH FROGMEN BRING THE BODIES ASHORE. AS EACH BODY WAS LIFTED FROM THE WATER A LOW WAIL WENT UP FROM THE WATCHERS. THE BODIES HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO CAIRO HOSPITALS - AND AUTHORITIES HAVE ASKED FOR PUBLIC CO-OPERATION IN THE GRIM TASK OF IDENTIFYING THE DEAD.
