  • Description

Four imprisoned members of Chile's outlawed "Revolutionary left Movement" (MIR) talking with newsmen in Santiago last week, the day after they appeared on nationwide television urging their comrades to lay down their arms.

The four MIR leaders said they now thought that fighting the military was a "sterile struggle" tantamount to "suicide".

They said most of the MIR's arms had been seized and its leaders were on the run. The night before the meeting with the journalists an MIR member was killed by security forces who were about to arrest four MIR members in a Santiago suburb.

The four prisoners were introduced to newsmen by Secretary-General to the Government, Hernan Bejares, and then he and the guards withdrew from the room to allow frank questioning of the four men.

The MIR announced less than five months ago that it was launching a "violent offensive" against the Chilean government.
