Background: Fourteen nations competed in the 10th European Judo Championships held Amsterdam, Holland, May 14-15. Britain did not send a team; she disapproves of the continental judging system, and will only compete under Japanese referees.

A key match was in the 4th Dan category of Judo's highest rank - the Black Belt - where Outelet (Belgium) defeated Wagenaar (Holland). Geesink (Holland) won the heavy weight Judo championship from Tempesta (Italy), and Holland also won the team competition.
