  • Description

After a period of strained relations, France and its former colony Chad, have started to work out their differences. A joint commission of representatives from each country began negotiations last week (28 January) on French technical assistance.

This has been a sore point with Chad. Recently the government criticised France for withdrawing technicians and development personnel without prior consultation.

The Commission meetings have been taking place in the Chad capital, N'Dhamene, formerly known as Fort Lamy. Secretary General M. Traotobaye Djito, has been leading the Chad team. The French negotiators have been headed by M. Toussin, technical counsellor to the French Secretary of State for Co-operation.

Three main points dominate the agenda: the formulation of a programme for French technical assistance; the details of the accords between the two countries, and finally, a review of economic problems and proposals.

Another meeting will soon take place in N'Djamena, which will bring together the Chad Minister for Foreign Affairs, M. Djirabe Doralta, and the French Secretary of State for Co-operation, M. Francois Deniau.
