    World champion milers Jim Ryun, of the United States, held off a challenge by Olympic Champion Kipchoge Keino of Kenya, in Los Angeles on Saturday (22 January), to win the mile race (1.6 kms) at the Sunkist International Track Meet.

    Ryun finished in 4 mins 06.8 secs, while Meino's time was 4:07.3. Chris Fisher of Australia was third in 4:10.7.

    The slow starting event speeded to a wildly-cheered finish, as Ryun forged down the home straight. Keino, a Nairobi police inspector who beat Ryun in the Olympic 1500 metres in 1968, put up a strong challenge, but he was never able to get within less than four yards (metres) of Ryun.

    SYNOPSIS: The big event at the Sunkist International Track Meet in Los Angeles on Saturday night was the mile race.

    The field of seven runners featured Jim Ryun of the U.S. and Kenya's Kipchoge Keino. The race started off slowly, but Ryun soon forged ahead to pace the rest of the field. Keino stayed back for the first two laps, but then began to challenge Ryun. keino beat Ryun in the Olympic fifteen-hundred metres in 1968.

    Both runners soon outstripped the rest of the field, but Keino was never able to get within less than four yards of Ryun.the event ended in wild cheering as the two runners headed for the finish.

    Ryun the winner in four-minutes, six-point-eight seconds.
