  • Description

99 people were killed last Sunday (August 9th) when a Peruvian airliner crashed into a hillside near Cuzco, 375 miles (600 kms) south-east of Lima. The only survivor was the co-pilot, who was badly burned.

The aircraft was a lockhead Electra turboprop, belonging to the peruvian airline Lansa. It had 93 passengers on board, and a crew of seven. Among the passengers, who were all killed, was a party of Americans, most of them high-school students, who had been on a cultural exchange visit. They had just finished a tour of the area, and were on their way back to Lima. The peruvian passengers included a couple on honeymoon.

The aircraft had just taken off from Quispiquilla airport, at Cuzco, when the pilot radioed that he had mechanical difficulties and was turning back. Seconds later. radio contact was lost. An eyewitness said that he saw the aircraft crash into the hillside. He said there was an explosion, and dense smoke rose from the wreckage. When he got near, flames were leaping up, and he could hear cries from the victims.

When firemen, troops and police arrived on the scene nine miles (14 kms) from Cuczo, to look for survivors and recover the bodies, they found wreckage strewn over an area of about 800 yards (metres) across.
