The annual Far Eastern Amateur Rowing Championships were held at Kuala Belait in Brunei at the weekend. Oarsmen from Hongkong, Singapore, Saigon, Manila and Brunei took part.
The visitors were in good form. In the coxed fours, Hongkong swept into the finals with an easy victory over the Brunei crew.
The racing was held on the Belait River which in parts is still infested by crocodiles.
Singapore did well. Its coxed four from the Changi Yacht Club edged the Club Nautique de Saigon. Throughout the regatta oarsmen had to heave against a strong current.
The regatta is held every year in a different port. This year, apparently because of the remoteness of Brunei, several countries decided not to attend.
Singapore scored another win over Saigon in the coxed pairs. Its crew of Gregory, Epton and Mays surged away to pass the finishing marker an easy winner.
