  • Description

On Friday (9 May) the Cannes Film Festival opened for the 28th time -- with the usual international contingent of film stars and personalities in attendance.

The inaugural gala evening went ahead as planned despite the fact that earlier in the day a small charge of plastic explosive had gone off near the Festival Palace. The blast shattered windows in the Palace, but no-one was hurt and workmen replaced the glass in time for the opening.

The ceremony was performed by the French Minister for Cultural Affairs, Michel Guy ... and among the famous names present were this year's jury President jeanne Moreau, Pierre Salinger, Bulle Ogier, Lea Massari, Pascale Audrey and Marthe Keller.

Competition in this year's festival is expected to be unusually tough, with two United States productions and a Danish entry emerging as hot favourites for the Grand Prize. The winner will be announced on 23 May.

The Cannes Film Festival was once famous for the razzmatazz of scantily-dressed starlets vying with each other to catch the attention of photographers. But today it has changed into the most serious meeting-place for the world's film-makers and attracts entries from as far afield as Hong Kong and the Soviet Union.
