    AMERICAN INFANTRYMEN CAPTURED A LARGE ASSORTMENT OF WEAPONS DURING A FIVE-HOUR BATTLE ON THURSDAY (12 APRIL) AT DAU THIENG, NEAR THE CAMBODIAN BORDER. U.S. AUTHORITIES CLAIM TO HAVE KILLED 120 VIET CONG DURING THE CONFLICT.

    THE SCENE OF THE BATTLE WAS A HEAVILY WOODED AREA WEST OF A RUBBER PLANTATION NEAR DAU THIENG, 50 MILES NORTHWEST OF SAIGON. IT BEGAN WHEN A 400-STRONG VIET CONG FORCE TRIED TO OVERRUN A TEMPORARY BATTALION OUTPOST SET UP BY THE U.S. 25TH. INFANTRY DIVISION. REPORTS DESCRIBE THE VIET CONG AS BEING QUICKLY CUT DOWN BY AUTOMATIC WEAPONS, MORTAR, ARTILLERY AND AIR STRIKES. AMERICAN LOSSES WERE GIVEN AS 14 KILLED AND 47 WOUNDED, AND A SERVICE WAS PERFORMED BY A U.S. CHAPLAIN SHORTLY AFTER THE CONFLICT.

    THE BATTALION OUTPOST HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED AS PART OF THE BIGGEST U.S. OPERATION OF THE VIETNAM CONFLICT, INVOLVING 75,000 TROOPS. CODE-NAMED 'COMPLETE VICTORY', THE TROOPS HOPE TO FLUSH VIET CONG FROM A 70-MILE AREA SOUTH OF SAIGON TO THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS AND THE CAMBODIAN BORDER. LAUNCHED EARLY LAST WEEK, IT INVOLVED AMERICAN, AUSTRALIAN, NEW ZEALAND, THAI AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES.
