Unidentified gunmen burst into a Madrid lawyer's office and sprayed machine gun fire at nine left-wing sympathisers. They killed three immediately and another died a few hours later. Police blame GRAPO for the abduction of the President of Spain's Advisory Council of State, Senor Antonio Maria Oriol Y Urquijo. They kidnapped Lieutenant-General Emilio Villaescusa the President of the Supreme Council of Military Justice on Monday (24 January), a few hours before the attack on the lawyer's office.

Background: In Madrid, the death toll from a machine gun attack on a left-wing lawyer's office rose to four on Tuesday (25 January). The attack followed riots overnight in which a 20-year-old girl died. Demonstrators and riot police clashed in the Spanish capital on Monday night (24 January) in a bloody demonstration, part of a new wave of political violence.

SYNOPSIS: The demonstrators were protesting at the death of a 19-year-old student in riots the previous night. Then, about 2,000 people were calling for full political amnesty and it was one of the biggest and roughest demonstrations seen in the capital.

It's thought the girl died after her skull was shattered by a police smoke bomb. The police also used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse Monday night's demonstrators. Clouds of tear gas hung over Madrid's main shopping avenue after the clash. The demonstrations have been classed as the bloodiest since the death of General Francisco Franco 15 months ago.

Meanwhile, a group calling themselves the October First Anti-Fascist Resistance Groups (GRAPO) have kidnapped a top Army General, apparently in revenge for the abduction of other top Spanish officials from their homes.
