  • Description

Two Picasso prints were stolen in broad daylight from an art exhibition in Bangkok on Tuesday (19 March). The prints, both originals, were part of a collection of 58 engravings by the artist on display at the Alliance Francaise.

The prints were found to be missing on Tuesday evening by the Director of the Alliance, M. Edmond Babin. M. Babin thought the pictures had been stolen in the late afternoon and that the thief or thieves had been disturbed. Masking tape was found around the frames of two other prints.

There was a guard on duty at the exhibition, but the stolen prints had been hanging at the furthest and of the room from him. The guard on duty at the time later said he suspected "a woman with a huge handbag" took the prints from behind their plastic coverings. He added that he was mystified about how the theft could have taken place.

Security was tightened at the exhibition as police began the search for the missing Picassos. The exhibition was sponsored by the French government who have insured the prints. But the Alliance Francaise, says its Director must accept the burden of responsibility.
