Background: Persia's Parliamentary minority group - the Independents - are campaigning against the ruling Millennium (Nationalist) Party and the Opposition Madam (Peoples's) Party in the current general election ending in Teheran Aug 17.
Rallying the support Aug 13 in Teheran was the Independent' leader Dr. Ali Amini, former Finance Minister under ex-Premier Mossadegh, former Ambassador to the U.S. and critic of the powers exercised by the Shah.
Another Independent, a former deputy in the last Parliament, is Mr. Jafar Behbahani.
By Aug 145, results of polling in the provinces disclosed the Melliyun Party had so far won 90 of the total of 200 seats. The Mardam Party had secured 35, and the Independents three - making Party under Prince Minister Eqbal, though results were not to be know until the end of the month.
The conduct of the elections has been smooth up to now though the Mardam Party demanded and secured the dissolution electoral supervisory bodies in several constituencies on the ground of Government interference.
The election is being fought on purely domestic issues, as both parties endorse the Shah's foreign policy of preserving the independence and integrity of Iran.
