TRANSCRIPT: FIRST REPORTER: "The soldiers were alone in the observation post when at five minutes to eleven this morning a bomb was thrown over a twelve-foot wall. The explosion demolished the post which is just around the corner from the Rosemount Police Barracks which have been under repeated attack recently. Parked only three yards away, about to deliver bread, was a van driven by Mr. John MacLaughlan. The sappers looked for the remainder of the bomb which was thought to have contained about twenty pounds of gelignite. The protective equipment worn by the soldiers was totally useless in this latest attack by terrorists. The attack on the post came during a twenty-four hour period which has seen an ominous change in tactics."



SECOND REPORTER: "Commander Albert Anderson, newly appointed a Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Stormont Ministry of Home Affairs with special responsibilities for security, was in Larne this morning to inspect the police station wrecked by a terrorist bomb. Seven policemen were injured, one of them seriously. It was the first of a night of attacks aimed specifically at the Royal Ulster Constabulary. The funeral of one man who was shot ran into trouble today. The coffin of an IRA man killed at the weekend was being carried away when fighting started in the crowd. The army had moved forward to investigate some shots--apparently those fired by the IRA guard of honour. The army moved their vehicles while the cortege waited in the background. The fighting was confined to a small section of the crowd, but while it lasted it was fierce. Eventually, the army did retire, and the funeral continued quietly--but already tonight, more shots have been fired in Belfast."

Background: Violence continued this week in Northern Ireland. In this film, the aftermath of two terrorist bombing raids in which two soldiers died and seven policemen were injured, one seriously, and a funeral cortege which was hit by fighting. The events took place in Londonderry, Larne and Belfast, and mark a recent increase in bombing raids against police and army personnel. SYNOPSIS: Violence continued this week in Northern Ireland. Among the major incidents--the terrorist bombing of an army post in Londonderry in which two soldiers died. They were on guard at the time in the observation post, which is beside the Catholic Bogside district. The bomb was thrown into the post from an adjoining playground. Three men were seen to run away immediately afterwards, and the extremist Provisional wing of the Irish Republican Army later claimed responsibility for the incident. It brought the total of British troops killed in Northern Ireland this year to thirty.

Earlier, a senior Government Secretary responsible for security, Commander Albert Anderson, inspected the wreckage of a police station in Larne, County Antrim, in which seven policemen were injured--one of them seriously.

In Belfast, further violence--this time, at the funeral of an I.R.A. youth.

The youth had been killed by security forces during the weekend as he tried to bomb a city club. Troops moved in on the funeral procession as shots rang out from the I.R.A. guard of honour, but eventually retired. The funeral continued quietly.
