  • Description

Popular West German girl Rosi Mittermaier won the women's downhill in record time at the Winter Olympics at Innsbruck, Austria on Sunday (8 February).

Miss. Mittermaier's win made her the first West German woman to take an Olympic Alpine medal for 16 years. It also put Miss. Mittermaier on the first stop towards a unique table because she loads overall in the current standings and if she lives up to expectations in this week's slalom and giant slalom she would become the first woman to take all three Olympic golds.

Local girl and pre-race favourite Austria's Brigitte Totschnig beat the track record with an extremely fast one minute 46.68 seconds and seemed set for victory. But Miss. Mittermaier was even quicker to the intermediate point and although she was slower through the fast final bend she was able to hang on for a record one minute 496.26 seconds.

Miss. Mittermaier's task was made easier by the fact that the previous record holder Marie Therese Madig of Switzerland was forced to pull out only hours before the race because of influenza.

The bronze modal was unexpectedly won by American 20-year-old Cindy Nelson from Lutsen, Minnesota.

Miss. Mittermaier's win was the more satisfying because on a slope near the fast Hoadl course a year ago she broke an arm in an accident with a holiday skier. Her win took much of the attention from the outstanding Russian and East German squads who between them have collected 11 of the 15 gold medals won so far -- the Russians in front with seven titles.
