  • Description

At a special demonstration to newsmen on Tuesday (1 May), the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) showed off a new heavy gun developed and built in Israel together with Soviet and United States military equipment that has been adapted and improved for IDF use.

The new gun -- the Soltam L33 -- is a 155 millimetre self-propelled weapon. Its crew are protected by an armour-plated cabin and its firing range is said to be 20 kilometres.

Two self-propelled guns built in the United States, which have been adapted for Israeli use, were also demonstrated. These were the double-barrelled 20 mm anti-aircraft gun mounted on a half-tracked armoured vehicle, and the M-110 203 mm Howitzer. The Israeli version of this gun fires a 90.6 kilogram shell filled with 16.6 kg of tnt -- the most destructive shell in the IDF's armoury.

Also on display were a number of Soviet-built T54 and T55 tanks captured from Arab forces by the Israelis, who claim their modified version is superior to the original tank.

The United States-built Bell 206 light rescue helicopter was put through its paces.
