  • Description

Trade ministers from 39 African countries began their first conference on trade and monetary problems in Abidjan on Wednesday (11 May).

Main aims of the four-day conference are to define common African positions for forthcoming world-wide trade talks in Tokyo and Africa's future links with the enlarged European Common Market.

Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny gave the opening address. Mr. N'Zo Ekangaki, Secretary General of the Organisation for African Unity (OAU) and Mr. Robert Gardiner, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, also spoke at the opening session.

By the end of the conference it is hoped to have a charter on African economic co-operation, which will be presented to heads of state at the OAU summit conference in Addie Ababe on May 25th.
