OBSERVERS SAID LATER THAT THERE WAS NO DOUBT THAT THE STANDARD OF WALKING HAD MADE TREMENDOUS STRIDES SINCE THE FIRST BIG WALK TOOK PLACE 14 YEARS AGO.

    THE ORGANISERS SPARED NO EFFORT TO MAKE THIS YEAR'S BIG WALK -- THE MAIN EVENT IN SINGAPORE'S SPORTING CALENDER -- AN EVEN MORE SPECTACULAR EVENT. IN A MOVE TOWARDS OBTAINING INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION, THEY MADE THE DISTANCE AN EXACT 20,000 METRES -- OR 12.5 MILES. THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 46 TEAMS TAKING PART, AND THREE MAIN SECTIONS: FOR MEN, WOMEN, VETERANS, AND JUNIORS.

    THE WINNER OF THE MEN'S SECTION WAS A YOUNG LABOURER, K. THIRUMAL, JUST BEATING THE WELSH CHAMPION, ROY HART. THIRUMAL COVERED THE COURSE IN ONE HOUR 40 MINUTES AND 43.6 SECONDS. HE WAS PLACED SECOND LAST YEAR. WINNER OF THE WOMEN'S SECTION, WHICH COVERS ONLY 10 OF THE 12.5 MILES, WAS MISS MAUREEN LEE. THE JUNIOR SECTION WENT TO 19-YEAR-OLD B.K.S. MANIAM, A RUNNER-UP FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS. WINNER OF THE VETERANS CLASS WAS MR D. KRISHNSAMY.

    THE BIG WALK ENDED AT SINGAPORE'S FARRER PARK. THOUSANDS OF CONTESTANTS LINED THE ROUTE TO WATCH THE WALKERS STRIDE BY.
