TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 1 BUCKLEY: "FOREST MOST IN MY MIND AT THE MOMENT IS GETTING THE PLAYERS FIT AND THEN MAKING SURE WE GET ENOUGH POINTS TO AVOID RELEGATION. ITS AN OLD CLICHE BUT THATS WHAT WE MUST BE LOOKING TO ACHIEVE IN THE FIRST PLACE. I WOULD HAVE SAID THE SAME THING LAST SEASON YOU KNOW WITH NO PROMISES, BUT THE PLAYERS NEVER CEASE TO AMAZE ME AND I'VE GOT A LOT OF CONFIDENCE IN THE WAY WE PLAY AND I'M PRETTY SURE WE MIGHT SURPRISE A FEW PEOPLE."
SEQ 2 BIRTLES: "IT WAS JUST AS GOOD AS WINNING THE EUROPEAN CUP OR LEAGUE CUP REALLY AND PLAYING AT WEMBLEY BECAUSE YOU KNOW ITS A FEELING I'VE NEVER FELT BEFORE. WINNING PROMOTION WITH ANYBODY. NEARLY GOT THERE WITH NOTTS COUNTY AND GOT BEAT IN THE PLAYOFFS AND THAT'S ONE OF THE WORST FEELINGS IN FOOTBALL I'VE FELT PERSONALLY. SO TO GET IT TWO YEARS ON THE TROT WAS UNBELIEVABLE AND JUST HOPEFULLY NOW WE CAN GO THROUGH AND GET INTO THE FIRST AND MAKE IT THREE ON THE TROT".
SEQ 3 SHERWOOD: "FOOTBALL'S GOT ITSELF INTO SUCH A GOOD POSITION NOW AND YOU KNOW THERE IS A LOT OF EXCITEMENT AS I SAY RIGHT THROUGH THE SEASON AND I THINK ITS DAFT TO CHANGE IT. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE WANT TO BREAK AWAY FROM IT. ITS GOT TO BE DOWN TO POWER AND MONEY I CAN'T REALLY SEE ANY OTHER REASON AT ALL REALLY. I'M DISAPPOINTED."
SEQ 4 TAYLOR: "ITS GREAT TO SEE THEM BACK IN THE SECOND DIVISION. THAT'S WHERE I STARTED WITH THEM. THEY WERE IN THE SECOND DIVISION WHEN I STARTED. I PLAYED MY PART AND BROUGHT THEM DOWN A DIVISION SO I'M QUITE PLEASED THEY ARE BACK UP IN THE SECOND DIVISION. WHO IS TO SAY THAT THEY WON'T ACTUALLY GET BACK INTO THE FIRST DIVISION."

    Background: VARIOUS LOCATIONS, UNITED KINGDOM

With the possible arrival of the Super League to English soccer, second division teams no longer know if there will soon be a first division for them to gain promotion to.

After two successive promotion years Grimsby Town is back in the second division. It was a successful first division team in the 1930s. The team was fifth in 1935, its highest-ever finish in the top division.

Forty three years on since the club's last outing in the top division, Grimby ambition today is to play there again. Grimsby's won promotion the last two seasons under manager Alan Buckley.

Buckley said he wants first to get enough points to avoid relegation. "I would have said the same thing last season..but the players never cease to amaze me and I've got a lot of confidence in the way that we play and I'm pretty sure we might surprise a few people."
Gary Birtles is one of the team's most experienced players. Thirteen years on since playing and scoring for Nottingham Forest in the European Cup, he says winning promotion today is just as satisfying.

Goalkeeper Steve Sherwood is another experienced Grimsby player. He enjoyed great success with Watford in the 1970s and early 1980s. He has doubts about next season's proposed Premiere League and believes it is only money which is motivating managers considering the breakaway.

Sherwood's old Watford manager was Graham Taylor, himself a former Grimsby player of the early 1960s. Today's he has the most prestigious job in English football.
